Join Simon Jolly from Pinkerton Landcare and Environment Group (PLEG) to check out this patch of prime Grassy Eucalypt Woodland in Melbourne’s West. 

At Mount Cottrell, Parks Victoria staff will show us some of the best grassland so far acquired in the Western Grassland Reserve. We’ll also see what was some of the worst grassland, a large block that was 90% Serrated Tussock now turned into a native-dominated landscape thanks to intensive management over many years. That should be interesting!

The two blocks we are visiting are the ‘Radio’ and ‘Middle blocks of the Western Grassland reserve.

Feel free to join us for just the morning or afternoon. We’ll enter Pinkerton Forest via the unassuming but signposted gate just south of 1668 Mount Cottrell Road. There is a toilet is on site and we will boil the billy for lunch after the walk. 

We aim to get to the Mount Cottrell grasslands about 12:45pm. It’s about a 10-minute drive from Pinkerton Forest.

BYO lunch, snacks, water and sunscreen. Dress for the weather and wear closed shoes. There’s no difficult walking except over slightly rocky grassland.

We may be able to organise some carpooling, say from Rockbank, Footscray of Sunshine Stations (tbd). Tick the box on the registration form if that’s something you’d be interested in, as a driver or passenger.
